How to Add Storyboard That LTI 1.3 as an App to Canvas

Canvas admin: Install Storyboard That LTI 1.3 via Developer Keys, copy Client ID, configure in Settings

Note: The Storyboard That LTI 1.1 is outdated. Please install this version instead, going through your account's admin.

Before You Begin: Choosing Where to Install

Canvas installations can vary depending on your district’s structure.

Storyboard That can be installed at either the root account level or a sub-account level, depending on who should have access:

  • Root-level installation: Makes Storyboard That available to all teachers and students across the district.
  • Sub-account installation: Restricts visibility to only the teachers and students in that sub-account.
Please Note: Storyboard That's Canvas integration is designed for school- or district-level subscriptions. Individual teacher level subscriptions do not include this integration.

Steps for Installing Storyboard That LTI 1.3 to Canvas

  1. Go to your Canvas Admin page.
  2. Go to the Account / Course level for where you want to install Storyboard That LTI 1.3.
    1. This step depends on how your school internally organizes your courses in Canvas.
    2.  Be sure to install the app at the correct account or sub-account level based on who should have access (see “Before You Begin” above).
    Be sure that the teachers you want using Storyboard That are in the Canvas accounts or courses that you select.
  3. Navigate to Developer Keys:

  1. Click the "+ Developer Key" button and select LTI Key.

Enter the following information:

  1. Click Save and make sure the Key State is set to ON

  1. Copy the ID under the Details column, just above the "Show Key" button.
  2. Go to the Settings page. *Make sure step 1 is complete so you are installing the app at the correct Account/Course level.*
    1. Go to Apps
    You may need to click "View App Configurations" for the "+ App" button to appear.
  3. Click "+ App" to add a new app, and choose "By Client ID". Paste in the ID that you just copied and click Submit.
  1. Go to "Connect My LMS" in your Storyboard That dashboard and go to the Canvas Tab as shown below:
    1. Canvas Dashboard URL: The URL to your Canvas Home page or Dashboard (ie, https://mydistrict.instructure.com)
    2. Client ID: from step 6
    3. Deployment ID: this can be found by clicking the Settings button on the app you just deployed in Canvas.
  2. Click Submit
  3. If you previously installed Storyboard That LTI 1.1, go to App Configurations and delete the LTI 1.1 app so that your teachers and students will only use LTI 1.3 and avoid confusion.
  4. To get your students creating, teachers should create a Storyboard That assignment from their course by choosing Storyboard That LTI 1.3 as an external tool!
    1. Once students begin the assignment, their Storyboard That accounts will be automatically created.

Data Privacy & Permissions

When Storyboard That connects through Canvas, it receives only limited user information needed to create and match accounts:

  • Canvas User ID (required)
  • Name (optional, used for displaying in dashboards)
  • Email (optional, used to match existing Storyboard That accounts)

Important Note about Roles and Custom Roles in Canvas

  1.  Storyboard That supports three roles:
    1. Admin
    2. Teacher
    3. Student
  2. When a user launches Storyboard That from Canvas via LTI 1.3, we map Canvas roles into these three as follows:.
    1. Canvas Administrator / Account Admin → Admin
    2. Canvas Instructor → Teacher
    3. Learner → Student
    4. All other roles (TA, Designer, Content Developer, Observer, custom roles, etc.) → Student
  3. 👉 For data privacy and security reasons, we default every non-Instructor, non-Admin role to Student. This ensures no unintended access to teacher-level data or administrative functions.
  4. ➡️ If your district uses custom roles that should function as Teachers in Storyboard That, please contact us at support@storyboardthat.com so we can adjust the mapping for your account.
